Could This Be A Grant For You? – Calf Housing For Health and Welfare

As part of the Farming Investment Fund, the government has recently introduced the calf housing for health and welfare grant.

The grant is set to open for applications later this Summer, so now is the time to start thinking about it – could this be helpful to you?  Are you planning to upgrade your calf shed or build a new one?

The grant aims to improve the health and welfare of calves (up to 6 months old) by providing a good ambient environment and facilitating social contact through pair or group housing. It will be available for beef and dairy farmers.

You could get a 40% grant towards the cost of calf housing which:

  • provides good ventilation and protects calves from draughts
  • protects calves from getting too hot or too cold
  • has solid floors with adequate drainage and straw bedding
  • houses calves in pairs or groups
  • provides calf enrichment
  • meets environmental objectives, such as installation of solar panels

The grant will be competitive, so the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) will prioritise calf housing projects that have the biggest impact on animal health and welfare and have considered innovation, productivity, and environmental outcomes.  The application process will be in 3 parts.
