2023 BPS Giving Up Or Taking On Land Implications

2023 is the last year of the current BPS which is linked to land areas and entitlements.

In 2024, BPS will become ‘delinked’ from land.  This means that you will not need land to claim BPS in 2024 as long as you claimed BPS in 2020, 2021 and/or 2022, and have made a claim in 2023.

The implications for someone who has given up land but is still farming is that they will continue to receive payments on that land from 2024-2027, which could be in region of £235/ha over the 4 years on the average land area claimed in 2020-2022.

For someone who has just taken on extra land and wishes to claim BPS, they can claim in 2023 but will need to buy entitlements.  The entitlement value you pay will depend on what you are likely to receive, which will vary depending on deductions being made on BPS (driven by size of historic claims bandings).

If you have given up farming but haven’t claimed on the lump sum exit scheme, then if you can claim on a minimum 5ha in 2023 you will qualify for payments on the land given up in the last year, paid over the ‘delinked’ period 2024-27.

Entitlement values now are in the region of £75-£80/Ha so represent good value if you can claim £105-£152/ha (depending on the % Reduction Bandings that you are in).  For your specific farm queries, contact Sophie Cahill on Tel: 07496 587011 or email sophiecahill@fcgagric.com
